OUR POSITION AS REGARDS INVESTIGATION IN CHACHA’S CASE

After two years of investigating the disappearance of Chacha, our organizations position in summary is that it appears that the main goal of the police or the principal objective of the police investigation was to exonerate Chacha’s husband.

Every effort on the part of the police was geared toward ensuring that Chacha’s husband would not be blamed. That is a very wrong approach or motive for an investigation. Consider the following points:

(1) When Emeka Ugwuonye suspected Chacha’s husband in June of 2016, the police arrested Emeka and brought Chacha’s husband to interrogate Emeka in the police office.

(2) When Emeka Ugwuonye linked the body of an unknown woman found in Bwari, Abuja, to Chacha, the police spent 2 years denying that the body was Chacha’s. The police and Chacha’s husband claimed that a DNA test was conducted an that such test showed the body was not Chacha’s. Why such a wholesale lie by the police? Indeed, even after the IPO told his superior that the body must be Chacha’s body, they refused to buy that.

(3) However, when Chacha’s last known boyfriend confessed to murdering Chacha and dumping her remains where they were found, the police changed their position. Despite the fact that the said confession was made under suspicious circumstances, the police became super active, and suddenly accepted the theory we gave and which they had spend two years denying.. They quickly paraded him and in the public statement of the then Police Commissioner, he claimed that Chacha’s husband was blackmailed by DPA (me). Even in that simple public statement, the police Commissioner could not hide the motive of exonerating Chacha’s husband.

(4) When DPA questioned the voluntariness of the confessions, the police quickly arrested Emeka Ugwuonye and detained him in a the Abattoir, a dangerous secret prison run by the Nigerian police, where atrocities are committed.

(5) When DPA continued to question the police’s handling of Chacha’s case, the police decided to arrest Emeka again, ending up filing 3 frivolous criminal indictments agains him.

(6) When Emeka accepted to represent one of the suspects, the police got jittery and decided to charge Emeka with murder along with the suspects in order to stop him from defending the suspect and in order to permanently scare Emeka and force him into silence.

Based on all that has happened, it is safe to accuse the police of corruption and incompetence in the handling of the investigation.

Nigerians must know the truth. Let the police serve the public, and not just one man.
